Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for conveyor-car high wall mining operations
   • Access, interpret and apply conveyor-car high wall mining operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements before proceeding
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete the allocated work
   • Identify and obtain / schedule resources required for operations to support the mining sequence
2. Position the launch
   • Coordinate activities related to the positioning of the launch with others at the site prior to commencement of, during, and on completion of the work activity
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up and shutdown procedures
   • Position the launch correctly
   • Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms
   • Recognise and respond hazardous conditions
3. Mine coal
   • Co-ordinate activities related to the mining of coal with others at the site prior to commencement of, during, and on completion of the work activity
   • Complete function tests on the miner and belts
   • Conduct and control mining procedures
   • Maintain supply of coal to the stacker
   • Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms
   • Recognise and respond to hazardous and emergency situations
   • Complete work in accordance with the agreed plan and outcomes and within the operating capacities of the allocated equipment
4. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Carry out visual and physical equipment inspections and fault finding processes
   • Carry out routine operational servicing, lubrication and housekeeping tasks
   • Carry out minor maintenance
   • Provide operator support during preparation for, and conduct of, major maintenance tasks
   • Process written records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of conveyor-car high wall mining operations including:

applying diagnostic and fault finding techniques

determining and obtaining resources required for operations

performing equipment inspections, operational servicing requirements and maintains clear written records of activities

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the conveyor-car high wall mining operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicate and coordinate activities with others

participate in shift briefing

clearly and concisely communicating and interpreting handover details

demonstrates completion of conveyor-car high wall mining operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

positioning the launch

performing functions test on at least four (4) of the following:

chain conveyor

cutter-heads

traction

shear-up/down

camera sprays

pan up/down

water sprays

steering wings

stab-jack

belt tracking

propulsion

coordinating and monitoring of at least one (1) of the following:

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting conveyor-car high wall mining operations through:
